  2. Twitter: Protect Updates or Not?

I used to always keep my twitter updates protected so that only people that I approved could follow my updates.  When I moved over to Wordpress I wanted to post my latest tweet on my site so I had to open up the updates.

The advantages of allowing myself to keep my updates protected are:

    • Ability to say anything that is top of mind.
    • Don’t have to care about correct grammar.
    • Can limit who sees my twitter updates.

    The disadvantages are:

    • Limits the amount of people that will be able to interact with me.
    • Doesn’t put me in the twitter public feed (Even though that’s not so important).

I would love to throw this out to you - the readers and ask what you think about this situation.  If you use Twitter (or don’t) would/do you keep your updates public or private and why?

I protect my tweets. I always try to use discretion when posting to the Internet, but I find some comfort in a little privacy.

At one time I was posting friends-only stuff to Twitter and putting public, technology-related updates on Pownce. That let me separate the private from the public. I’ve deleted my Pownce account and I don’t use Twitter as much: my current Prologue-themed WordPress blog lets me tag updates as Private to hide them from outside eyes. I keep Twitter around to follow and reply to friends. That setup has met my needs, so far.

So, I’ll stop droning on now.

It’s a really tough call. I never even thought about protecting my updates until I found out that my boss reads my twitter page. Now I’ve chosen to limit what I talk about on twitter and occasionally delete tweets.
